It doesn't cost a lot nowadays to stay current. People are always amazed when I tell them that I'm 40 and have three kids.

I know Britain is in the shits demographically and everything as its "Asian" population grows by leaps and bounds. But, enabling a new generation of geriatric parents because you are afraid of being accused of being 'agist' or something like that is just a bad, bad idea.
I had my kids pretty young, which I think is a good idea because you do have the energy and the stamina. I know people who have had their first at 40 or thereabouts and of course-they manage. But there are a few things they are not prepared for. First is how a "cute" and "cuddly" newborn baby can decimate one set of parents so utterly and completely. Sleep deprivation is torture.
Some of the men, I have noticed also have a very hard time adjusting to the fact that they are no longer number one in their wives' eyes. Seriously-a lot of dudes are waiting till their late thirties to get married, which means it has been all about them for a long time-and then they finally get married and it's all about them sexually-or as a couple.
It's quite a shock for these guys that their wives are suddenly not quite so interested in them, and that the breasts belong to baby.
People who want kids should have them-being a mother is the best thing that I ever have done in my life. I just think that starting your family at 40 brings with it a whole lot of issues, and intensive medical interventions are a whole other ball game as well.

I was actually in Poland when I read the article and felt like I was having a complete Jewlepathy moment with Teh Steyn about this concept.
The photo you see in the hard copy of the article-the Jewish cemetery in Krakow-is very much like the pictures that I recently took throughout Poland at each of the villages where my grandparents came from.
There are a few points in the article that really stood out for me. First of all, that in all of the countries where Jews were either expelled or murdered, they still cannot even afford the Jewish dead the decency to rest in peace, or to rest in order and serenity.
There is no respect for the living Jews, that is for sure, but not respecting the sanctity of human dead-well that is ultimately a whole other level of barbarity.
Underware being hung from lines, graves dug up, bodies exhumed, stones smashed-not even in death can the Jews have a moment of rest.
Every town in Poland that we went to had Jewish death in their backyard-but it was truly of very little consequence for any of the villagers young or old. Not in a malevolent way, but in a kind of very typically indifferent eastern European way. No big deal-just a plot of land where someone used to care about their dead loved ones when there were still Jews.

I think this is absolutely correct. The "Palestinian" question therefore is not actually a question at all, it is most emphatically a statement. It is a statement that says: I am devoted to the anhiliation of the Jewish people and nation.

But the "Jewish question" and the "Palestinian question" both are roads that lead to the very same place: denying the Jews the right to live, breathe and populate the world anywhere-not just in their ancestral homeland.
This is, no doubt, a disturbing thought-but it is the truth.
Those who would wish this existential conflict away by trying to frame it in terms of real estate or nationalism are utopian dreamers at best, and Jew-haters at worst. Does this discourage me? Not really.

In Warsaw, I saw a banner they had left at the Warsaw Ghetto Memorial. It said in Hebrew that it was from the delegation of IDF officers: "Edim B'Madim", which in Hebrew means "witnesses in uniform".
For me, it meant "witnessess NOW in uniform"-so don't f&ck with us.

We hired our third Polish taxi driver in Kielce-where there had a been a post-war pogrom against the Jews (the "tragedy" as our driver called it-ashamed). We needed to get to a small town, in the region of Chestechova, where my paternal grandmother and great-grandmother were born.
The taxi drivers-each one-would not rest until we found the synagogue and the cemetery in whichever town we needed to go to. They were on a mission with us.
We stopped at the small city hall and the driver was again, asking old people where the synagogue was. His persistence eventually led us to the empty lot where the synagogue once stood, but had been burned down.
It wasn't enough to empty the towns of all their Jews, all remaining remnants of Jewish life were destroyed by either the Nazis or the Poles.
But while at the city hall, my father (not a religious man at all) paused and said "I feel my mother and my grandmother here-this is where they lived, I can feel it in my bones, I feel them here".
After a few minutes, he said 'look, look over there' and pointed me toward a horse-drawn old wooden cart-exactly the type that would have been used 60-70 years ago. He said - look, that's exactly how it would have been. The wood was old and dark-just the type of wood that we had identified in the old "abandoned" Jewish homes in other towns.
After, our driver, Stanislaw, asked a few more people about the cemetery, we got a lead. It was down the main road toward Kielce. We were instructed to turn down a stone road, land drive. We drove along the little pebbles and drove on and on and saw nothing.
We kept driving-still nothing but fields. This goes on for several more minutes.
Then, out of the blue, who do we see but the farmer and his son on the horse-drawn buggy.
Stanislaw asks them if they know where the Jewish cemetery is and they say and motion 'follow us'. So, the two Jews with Polish roots, with the Polish driver who has never met a Jew till today, follow the horse drawn cart in slow motion down the dirt road.
Then, they stop and point. "There."
We look toward a circle of trees in the middle of the field. We have found the cemetery.
We get out and start looking for stones. There is nothing but earth and trees and ivy.
Suddenly, my father says-"look". He picks up a ceramic knob-part of a gravestone. Then I look down on the ground. There is a bone.
My dad is a doctor-so he easily identifies it as human, part of the lower spine, which means that the graves have either been desecrated or people were murdered there, left in fields to decompose.
I start to feel itchy and in pain. The ivy is toxic and I have to get out. I am unable to escape the conclusion that this place-some of the evil has grafted onto me physically. I am being instructed to get out. Now.
We climb out of the forest and our driver insists on speaking into the camera in Polish about what has happened. He has not had a regular working day-not in the slightest. He needs to tell people about it.
We thank Stanislaw, promise him a photo and drive back to Kielce quietly to take the train to Warsaw.

A Jewish lawyer has taken on the case of the Toronto Islamic familial murder case of Aqsa Parvez.
Now, I know he is getting paid to do a job, but statements like this are so reprehensible, and so disgusting that they just compound the evil.
"Her father's defence lawyer, Joseph Neuberger, said the details of the case indicate that immigrants need more help adjusting to life in Canada."
"We have to do a good job in reaching out to these families," said Neuberger. "Not only inviting them into a multicultural society, but I think we have to spend more time on social inclusion. What can we do to help these families adjust?"
I have an even better idea, how about not letting them into Canada in the first place.
It seems to me perfectly reasonable not to invite into Canada people who believe that murdering their daughter for the sake of profoundly tribal "honour" is a reasonable position.

What did people expect?
I haven't yet started writing up my notes about my trip to Poland.It's all a bit of a blur right now, but I made sure to write notes to myself every day about the things we saw, the people that we met, and the strange familiarity that I felt there-the Jewish influence, or should I say the ghosts of Jewish influences? The foods, the smells, the people assuming I was Polish.
It's hard to understand the vastness of the loss of human life until you have seen certain things personally. It's going to be hard to explain how many resources the Nazis dedicated to exterminating every living Jew in Poland. You can't imagine the small places that they got to-and then when the Jews were all dead, the synagogues were burned down and the cemeteries desecrated, stones used randomly for building projects. There was no element of human existence that was unexploited by the Nazis. Human bodies, human kindness, children, Jewish property, art, insurance, gold teeth, human hair-it's unimaginable.
It's going to be hard to explain the open spaces at Birkenau.
Hard to explain how our totally randomly selected Polish taxi drivers went through the bushes, fields and marshes with us to find the Jewish cemeteries. How they wouldn't stop in each town until they found where the synagogues had been, and where our families lay, and the moments when we sadly realized together, Pole and Jews, that not even in death were my people allowed to rest in peace.
How can I begin to explain the seedlings of Polish-Jewish reconciliation, or my realization that in Poland-Hitler posthumously enjoys a great victory-99% of Poles have grown up without knowing a single Jew.
How can I explain the palpable cultural and intellectual and artistic vacuums that were created in the wake of the Holocaust, and that I felt that there was a perceptible yearning in Poland for those Jews.
I need time to process it all.

There is not a single complete stone, only fragments, and a lonely, deep green tree ring around the graves. It's hardly a cemetery anymore, just a patch of overgrown forest near the memorial to the Jews burned in the barn. I guess I should say 'at least it is there', but that's not much consolation.
The sounds were as they were during the war, farm animals, the sound of the wind in the trees. But the ground cries out, the town is depressed. Spirits linger.

And just as a matter of geographical clarification, something that Mr. Nowak was so concerned about. My maternal grandfather came from Jedwabne, I have a copy of his naturalization papers on my desk. It says he was from Yetvawna, Lomsha, Poland.
Nationality: Pole. Nationality of parents: Pole.
My maternal grandmother from a small little town not far from there, a shtetl, near the eastern border of what is now called "Russia"-as a commenter pointed out-Belarus.
Both are just northwest of Bialystock.

I'm actually going to be taking you up on your suggestion next week. I'm not really going "back" to Poland because I've never been there before. But all of my grandparents were born there.
They were lucky enough to get out of Poland and into Canada, but everyone who stayed in Poland ended up in ovens, or burned alive in a barn in southeastern Poland-I assume you have heard of Jedwabne.
I wrote about it a little while ago. In Jedwabne, the Jews were rounded up-men, women and children and put into a barn.
The barn was set on fire and the Jews were burned alive.
The Poles didn't like the sound of the screams, so they played music outside the barn to drown out the sounds.
For many years, the Poles blamed the Nazis for this atrocity. However, in recent years, the Poles have come clean. They burned their neighbours alive because they were Jews.
My grandmother, she used to get letters from her father, the Rabbi, once she had arrived in Canada. They were from a little town near the eastern border with Russia. I have copies of those letters written in Yiddish-they are yellowed, but they have a Bialystock postmark.
I can see my great-grandfather's handwriting, but I can't understand all the words.
I have a picture of my grandmother and one of her sisters standing in front of their house, which doubled as a storefront and a little shtiebel.
