Conrad Black granted bail.
I hope this is the beginning of the end of his nightmare. I am so happy for Mr. Black. I have always believed that this was a serious miscarriage of justice and have said so in e-mails to Mr. Black himself.

It's All Fun And Games Until The Internet (Temporarily) Loses A Steyn
The great Steyn is taking a well deserved break to take care of some personal matters over the summer, as per his website.
Does anyone else feel the massive, weird absence in the blogosphere?
It's kind of not as fun without Teh Steyn around.
One of the most fun things each morning for me is checking various web sites, news and otherwise and finding the good, the bad and the disgusting stories and then seeing which of my local, national and international partners-in-hate and crime have found them, posted them, and commented on them.
Never mind the laughs that ensue when there is something truly outrageous said or posted by a hemp-wearing, jihadi-sympathizing lefty (etc..fill in your archetypes) and the reaction from people like Mark Steyn.
The banter, the posts, the laughs and counter-posts really make my day.
I don't know about you, but I am literally surrounded by droves of zombie liberals who wouldn't know a joke if it came right up to them and kicked them in the ass.
My very presence and existence offends them!
Luckily, as a "Community Organizer", I routinely bring together a crew of local members of the VRWC here in Toronto for lunches and lectures and whatnot.
Not everyone has that locally, so they must turn to the internet (thanks, ALGORE!!!).
All this is to say that I believe most of us haters feel a special affinity with Mark Steyn and see him as a real leader in the battle for western civilization.
We're like members of a secret club with no membership, without the secret handshake, and we all do what we can through our actions and words and blogs and books.
All this is to say that I hope Teh Steyn gets his well deserved rest and is able to attend to all his offline matters peacefully and successfully.

Feeling Polish
I think I mentioned how strangely familiar Polish culture and food felt while I was there with my father.Things tasted familiar, and felt familiar.
People kept approaching us, speaking to us in Polish. Nobody thought we were foreigners. That was really weird.
But the truth of the matter is I had four Polish grandparents, so it's not surprising that I felt some vibes there.
I am still writing up all my notes from the trip.
I thought I would share this picture with you in the meantime.

In Poland they have people all over who sell bagels from these little carts. They are poppy seed and sesame seed-just like the bagels that we know and love here in North America. They also sell these adorable bagel teething necklaces. Seriously-how amazing is that? A bagel teether?
See-that just felt very Jewish, but I guess it's a Polish/Jewish, Jewish/Polish thing. The cultures were intertwined in many ways, and not just in terms of cuisine. Could have been me with that bagel teether, if my grandparents didn't get out - or maybe not.
As a side note: cheese stuffed perogies are blintzes-period.

The Word You Never Wanted to Know
I am aghast.
But, here's the thing.
It doesn't really jibe with this.
Most of the women that I see covered from head to toe in their body bags are overweight, or obese. It would appear to me that they are seeking comfort in food, because their lives are so dreadfully unhappy.
Moreover, most of the women that I see in hijabs, are not smiling. Their faces are rarely animated. Many do not wear any make up whatsoever. If they wear glasses, they are old-fashioned and thick and quite ugly.
The exception is some of the Somali teenagers that I see on the streets, some of them seem to be having a little bit of fun, and are dressed in western clothing, save the hijab.
I don't think that I am imagining this.
Yesterday at the Canada Day celebrations near my house, there was a group of new immigrant women, all covered from head to toe, with their hijabs tied under their chins in traditional Iranian style.
One of the young girls was uncovered, but a six or seven year old child was covered (those six year olds can really arouse men I guess....).
One of them was quite heavily pregnant and trying to keep up with her toddler in the park. None of their menfolk were around. Did that make it easier or harder for them, I wondered.
None of them were smiling or joking around, compared to the breezy laughter of most of the other parents around the park.
I'm not exactly a softie when it comes to Islam, but a little part of me truly mourns the childhood of Muslim girls, and their minimal possibilities for a truly free, spirited life. When I see young girls covered up, I am outraged and my blood boils.
Is that a sign of weakness or humanity? I don't know.

Listen-I am a working mom. That means I have two full time jobs. That's my choice. I'm not the stay-at-home mom type. I like hanging out with adults, and I love my kids.
But, only a moron would not realize that when you are away from your job-life at work goes on without you.
When I returned (early-because I was going mental and we were broke) from my last mat leave at my Very Progressive and Wonderfully Diverse Employer I was shoved into a cubicle at the back of the building, with a different (demoted) title and area of work.
I didn't sue, or get depressed. I just spent the time scoping out other opportunities and eventually, things settled down and I found another position.
I know of at least 5 women who experienced the same thing-and these were both more senior and more junior than I.
You cannot expect to be absent and think that people are thinking about your career all the time. Every employee is replaceable. Just get over it.
