Better or worse than under Mubarak?
At this point, I would be inclined to argue that though he was a kleptocratic tyrant, 'at least' he was a relatively secular one, who still understood the strategic value of keeping the peace with Egypt, and keeping the Muslim Brotherhood down.
But just as I never thought I would be rooting for Quadaffi's mutilated corpse, neither did I ever think I might be rooting for the Mubarak regime.
Are some despicable tyrannies "better" than others? That's a pretty rich question.
Are some regimes "better" for women than others-it would appear so.
Fathers are required to protect the chastity and modesty of their daughters in this tradition by slicing the clitoris off, depriving women of sexual pleasure for their entire sorry lives, putting them at risk for death and infection and complicating the birth process.
But hey-what matters is that women know their place.
But the complicity of mothers in the mutilation of their own daughters is clearly more disturbing.

Seek And You Shall Find?
Alright.
This is a highly personal post that I am doing on behalf of my son with special needs who can't speak.
He has a lot of GI conditions that are associated with his particular syndrome, but he is unable to tell us what hurts, how it hurts, and if the medicines make him feel better.
My son has never slept through the night. A lot of people needle me and ask why I am always so tired. Well, it's because he doesn't sleep through the night-not ever. We have help from Monday-Friday at night and then we're on our own on the weekends.
I am looking for information from people who suffer from any, or some of the same conditions to tell me what it feels like, what medications have helped you and how your illnesses were diagnosed, and how you sleep.
I am looking to hear from people who are neurologically normal, or who are cognitively delayed but can speak and articulate what these things feel like.
I have access to a tremendous amount of peer reviewed medical material, but if you see a study that you think might help, or pulls the threads together-please send me a link, or post one in the comments.
I never thought about soliciting information from the entire world in a blog post, but it can't hurt.
If any of my co-bloggers want to re-post or link, I would be grateful. Somewhere out there is an answer.
So, if you, or anyone you know can help, please pass the word along.

Worst, Most Opportunistic Song EVAH? But EVAH?
I thought it was pretty brazenly opportunistic for the hierarchy of the NDP party to write some trite, obnoxious "really, really, it's really really Jack Layton" death bed words for him while he was literally taking his last breaths.
That's pretty damn awesome opportunism and chutzpah.
However, it is officially even more opportunistic to use the diabetes-sugar-coma inspiring and insipid crud as fodder for your own crappy song!
I think this is possibly one of the worst songs that I have ever heard in my entire life.
It's a moonbat Armenian channeling the made-up words of a socialist moron, with schmaltzy Jew violin in the background and sappy kids on the chorus.
My only question is WHAT COLOUR ARE THOSE KIDS, DAMMIT?

Mostly agree with this EXCEPT, and it's a big EXCEPT, that I am unconvinced that Muslim societies, that is to say sharia-based societies have any desire to give up the hate. Except perhaps the population of Iran.

In Which I Must Root for Little Hitler's Parents
Unfortunately, I must.

That's what has to be done, because first they will take your kids for having bad mean names, and then because you made a dirty joke, or because you pick your nose, or would prefer that your kids not go to the state recommended one-armed lesbian orthodontist.

The Shalit Release
I was watching the live stream from Israel from about 5:30 a.m this morning and it was mesmerizing. I actually didn't think that Shalit was alive. He looked frail and pale, skinny-pretty much like a concentration camp survivor. It looked like he couldn't really use his hand.
I have to tell you, I almost lost it when I saw him in his IDF uniform. I thought that was so gutsy, so brave. He went into captivity a soldier and came home a soldier, putting his uniform on the first chance he got-despite apparently fainting in the helicopter.
I thought the Egyptian television interview was barbaric and disgusting, beyond words kind of disgusting. You could see Shalit's chest rising up and down as her disgraceful pro-Palestinian "questions" were being asked.
How do I feel about all this. I am happy for the Shalit family. I feel for the families of other terror victims-thinking, how could these murderers be set free?
The bottom line though is this: Israel and the Jews are in a lose-lose situation. We have existential threats from every direction. If we negotiate with terrorists-we lose. If we don't-we lose.
The only way to "deal" with terrorists is to kill them. That's it. Other than "dead", civilians, Jews, the IDF, all of us lose.
I am so happy for the Shalit family, but it is clear that Gilad's release was signed in blood.
The Palestinian prisoners get fat in our jails-they laugh at our weakness. They improve their bodies and minds. We are so stupid, so decadent, and continue to appease our murderers.
It's impossible on some level not to feel like we-the Jews-are to blame for the current situation. Terrorists and their state or private enablers are emboldened. We need to emphasize the value of our lives not just through negotiation-but through actions.
No mercy to those who would destroy us. Mercy is repaid by barbarism, in innumerable ways.
Will there be more terrorism because of this deal? Yes.
Would there be more terrorism without this deal? Yes.
The only solution to the "terrorist" question is shoot to kill.

Why We Must Tolerate Hate
This is an absolutely excellent article from Globe & Mail columnist Lysiane Gagnon.
How on earth did it get past the editors at the Globe & Mail?
It makes all the important points about how useless and utopian it is to try to legislate "hate" away, and that most normal individuals don't need protection against 'derisive' speech-they can hit delete, or ignore it.
She rightly notes that direct calls for violence must be the line in the sand-and that is what the criminal code is for.
This is just music to my ears:

When Down Children Grow Up
An interesting piece from Israel.
Note that Down syndrome may be eliminated entirely due to genetic testing.
It's a very unusual thought.
When I was a day camp counselor, I had five year old campers one year.
The director didn't tell us that one of our campers had Down syndrome. This little boy's mom had his ears "clipped" and eye surgery done on him so that he would look more "normal" and cognitively he was delayed, but pretty high functioning.
I was kind of pissed at the director for not letting us now in advance.
We got through the summer.
I still have a picture of him. Anyway, I remember being sort of uncomfortable around him-Stephen was his name.
I realize now that G-d was setting the stage for me.
I have another memory of disabled people.
At another summer camp I went to, a group of mentally retarded kids were integrated for a week each summer. I remember that one of them lost control of their bowels in the lake and feces was bobbing in the water near one.
I remember the other kids screaming, horrified. I remember not feeling horrified by the feces, but by their horror.
How could they be so cruel?
I was about 12 or 13 at the time.
Again. Preparation.
Things are of course clear with 20/20 hindsight. But it seems impossible to me that those episodes could have have had such a strong impact on me-lasting a lifetime-and not be somehow tied to my own son.
Impossible.

BUSY BUSY
Well, the Jewish holiday of Sukkot starts this evening.
Trying to get a lot of stuff done. It has been really busy.
Here's a taste of how my days have been lately.
Last night, there was a terrible accident in two separate locations not far from where I live, so traffic was a beeeeyotch. It took me two hours to get home. I walked in to relative calm, and proceeded to change a dirty diaper. I thought I did a great job, too-hadn't even gone to the bathroom myself, heated up the leftovers for supper, husband had made a salad.
Then husband comes home and says OHMAHGAWD WHAT'S THIS.
Somehow, a massive turd had fallen out of the kids' diaper onto the carpet and I hadn't seen it. Lovely. So, the next few minutes were spent fumigating, opening windows and grabbing the stain remover for the carpet.
Then another kid wanted to show me his success in word searches, which is totally adorable but not before I've had at least two or three little mouthfuls of food-just to take the edge off.
Special needs kid all this time is blasting a combination of Tween Slut Music on the iPad alternating with 1950s schlock.
Everyone is having a ball, except my head feels like it's going to explode.
I also busted the teenager last night for being on Facebook too late (hahahahha, yes that is why you need to be "friends" with your kid on FB), and getting that teenager out of bed-well I think I need an effing crane.
This week I have also been procrastinating on two major wars with HELPY PEOPLE for special needs kid.
If it wasn't so pathetic, it would be funny.
One has to do with getting banned from a HELPY DENTAL office-I have to be the fireman now..and the other is the residuals of another clash with OTHER HELPY PEOPLE and picture me if you can in a little office with a psychologist who looks like Jabba the Hut-she was literally a metre wide and couldn't breathe, she was panting.
Her Second Banana was an antisemitic, dried up prune looking British woman who exaggerated my very Jewish sounding name every time she addressed me DESPITE the fact that I asked her PLEASE to call me by my first name.
This was a meeting to deal with the fact that I had been UPPITY with the other Jabba the Hut psychologist who was HELPING my son. That psychologist has the OOOOOH OOOH MAHMOOOD complex-if you could see her, you would know why she must be so happy to be finally, finally getting laid. It looks to me like her husband runs the risk of getting caught right between her butt cheeks, but I digress.
Anyway, in between all this I am working full time and having issues with The Slutty Single Crazy Rabbit Lady at work and The New Girl, too. Nevermind the fact that one of my married dude bosses who has a 'thingy' with The Slutty Crazy Single Rabbit Lady is also constantly cruising for gossip. For a non-Jewish Canadian dude, he is the BIGGEST FUCKING YENTA on the planet.
Then, I have to fit in belly dancing classes (WINNING!!!!) and the Martha Fucking Stewart Routine, service the husband, make the lunches and generally put on a fabulous outfit and face for work.
All in a day's work I suppose.
Therefore, blogging on the light side for the next few days if at all. Thank you for your patience and for listening to this rant.

They're Baaaaack
The 70s that is.
It was hard enough getting used to the 80s being back, and now the 70s.
I do like some of the stuff, I have to admit, and I have seen many young women bringing back the curling iron with a vengeance.
It's kind of freaky deaky though to see some of the "party clothes" that I was wearing in oh-grade 6 and 7 making a comeback. Like the plaid shirts with skinny belts, satin skirts, lip gloss.

Excellent Stuff.
Is it my imagination or has Pat softened his stance on Israel considerably?
There were times when I watched some of his videos, agreeing with much of what he said but being very uncomfortable about his militant anti-religious stance. You can't hate the G-d of Israel and love the Jews. It's not possible.
This video is really impressive though, and I detect a change. Am I wrong?
It still takes a lot of guts to make a clip like this, and to tell the truth.
