This is a terrible story, but I think it's legitimate to consider that trying to "help" the "disadvantaged" has a very serious inherent risk factor.
They had dedicated their careers to helping others escape poverty, she as a physician assistant in a city-run clinic in the Tenderloin and he as a clinical psychologist for inmates in the San Francisco County Jail system.
Maybe it's the "helping" people and professions that are part of the problem. How come people can't or won't help themselves?
This reminds me of the horrible story of the woman in New York who went to buy candy for underprivileged kids and two of them dropped a shopping cart on her head, putting her into a coma.

The Shafia Verdict
No doubt there will be much editorial commentary on the Shafia verdict in the coming days and months.
When I heard the guilty verdict, I can't say that I was "happy"-I wasn't. But I was glad that the jury was sensible and came to what I see as the only possible conclusion: three sisters and one expendable, barren second wife were murdered by the patriarch of the family and his wife-the girls' own mother.
From creating life in her womb to killing her own children-are there words to describe such craven backwardness of maternal instinct?
I would kill for my young. She killed her young.
When 9/11 occurred, for a few moments-a few very brief moments, I had a thought. Maybe NOW people will understand what we are up against.
Maybe now, seeing this, they will finally understand the enemy that we are facing.
Sometimes late at night I can still see the pictures of people jumping out the windows, playing over and over in my head.
There have, of course, been other moments where I have been appalled, and sickened to the point of physical heaving by Islamic terrorist atrocities-not excluding the murder of my own brother-in-law by Palestinian terrorists.
So, now-for a fleeting second, hope sprung eternal and I thought surely this will provide a moment of insight to people about what we are importing when we bring immigrants here from certain parts of the world-and what they have in common with the barbarities?
Can people remain so obtuse by choice, so often? So willfully blind?
The answer of course is yes-they can.
The only faint hope I have right now is that this episode may stimulate a discussion on immigration. The only fitting tribute to the murdered women can be that each of us takes individual actions to prevent this kind of thing-Islamic family "honour" murders from happening again in our midst.
And, of course the entire child "protection" racket in Canada must be exposed for its cowardice.
When we think about how many people knew about their suffering and stayed silent-it is appalling. When we consider that so many of those people are paid "professionals" we can only feel sick-and demand more accountability from the disgusting bureaucrats that we will never rid ourselves of, they need to be publicly named and shamed.
So very many people knew and stayed silent because they were afraid to offend the "cultural" sensibilities of a primitive, sickening tribal family from the dregs of Afghanistan.
Four freedom seeking women are dead, three of them sisters, but at least nobody in the Shafia family got offended.
Is that the kind of society we want to live in?
Those who do not fight back are complicit in this tale of woe, and the legend of "multiculturalism" and "diversity" that we have been forced by our elites to "celebrate" for decades now.
So, I can't celebrate the verdict. I feel no joy that Canadian prosecutors and the judiciary were forced to listen to this story in all its sorry detail. I can only hope that the next young Muslim immigrant girl who tries to have a life of freedom here in Canada will not meet the same grisly fate.
Time will tell.
