Maybe it's the "helping" people and professions that are part of the problem. How come people can't or won't help themselves?
This reminds me of the horrible story of the woman in New York who went to buy candy for underprivileged kids and two of them dropped a shopping cart on her head, putting her into a coma.

The Shafia Verdict
No doubt there will be much editorial commentary on the Shafia verdict in the coming days and months.
When I heard the guilty verdict, I can't say that I was "happy"-I wasn't. But I was glad that the jury was sensible and came to what I see as the only possible conclusion: three sisters and one expendable, barren second wife were murdered by the patriarch of the family and his wife-the girls' own mother.
From creating life in her womb to killing her own children-are there words to describe such craven backwardness of maternal instinct?
I would kill for my young. She killed her young.
When 9/11 occurred, for a few moments-a few very brief moments, I had a thought. Maybe NOW people will understand what we are up against.
Maybe now, seeing this, they will finally understand the enemy that we are facing.
Sometimes late at night I can still see the pictures of people jumping out the windows, playing over and over in my head.
There have, of course, been other moments where I have been appalled, and sickened to the point of physical heaving by Islamic terrorist atrocities-not excluding the murder of my own brother-in-law by Palestinian terrorists.
So, now-for a fleeting second, hope sprung eternal and I thought surely this will provide a moment of insight to people about what we are importing when we bring immigrants here from certain parts of the world-and what they have in common with the barbarities?
Can people remain so obtuse by choice, so often? So willfully blind?
The answer of course is yes-they can.
The only faint hope I have right now is that this episode may stimulate a discussion on immigration. The only fitting tribute to the murdered women can be that each of us takes individual actions to prevent this kind of thing-Islamic family "honour" murders from happening again in our midst.
And, of course the entire child "protection" racket in Canada must be exposed for its cowardice.
When we think about how many people knew about their suffering and stayed silent-it is appalling. When we consider that so many of those people are paid "professionals" we can only feel sick-and demand more accountability from the disgusting bureaucrats that we will never rid ourselves of, they need to be publicly named and shamed.
So very many people knew and stayed silent because they were afraid to offend the "cultural" sensibilities of a primitive, sickening tribal family from the dregs of Afghanistan.
Four freedom seeking women are dead, three of them sisters, but at least nobody in the Shafia family got offended.
Is that the kind of society we want to live in?
Those who do not fight back are complicit in this tale of woe, and the legend of "multiculturalism" and "diversity" that we have been forced by our elites to "celebrate" for decades now.
So, I can't celebrate the verdict. I feel no joy that Canadian prosecutors and the judiciary were forced to listen to this story in all its sorry detail. I can only hope that the next young Muslim immigrant girl who tries to have a life of freedom here in Canada will not meet the same grisly fate.
Time will tell.

Toronto: Man Jailed for Sexually Assaulting Wife
This is a story with no winners except the lawyers.
Parents split up, kids with a busted home and criminal proceedings.
A few things about the story really bother me.
We have no way of knowing what married people do together and how.
But the things that really jumped out at me in this article was the strange timing.
"The ex-husband claimed she delayed reporting her rape allegations until eight months later in the context of a family law dispute involving their two children." They had a history of roughness, and maybe he is a jerk, who knows?But the custody issue is always rife for abuse.
The attitude of the judge seems to also be very unusual-ordering this fellow to see a forensic psychiatrist, in addition to the destruction of his career.
Will he be forced to take some brain-altering medicine as well?
The wife has effectively destroyed the husband-his parenting role, access to his kids and his career pretty much for something that appears to have been in the "normal" range of their past behaviour.
Like I said, we'll never know exactly what happened, but I do know that few things destroy a father's access to his children like the accusation of sexually abusing his children-even if it's baseless and proven false, an accusation of spousal rape would do the same.
The custody issue makes me very suspicious of this case.

The New/Old Jew Hate
I rarely disagree with the great Caroline Glick, but hey-there's a first for everything.
She has a piece about the new/old antisemitism, and I took a long hard read of it, and this bit actually jumped out at me:

So, I disagree.
I believe that antisemitism has never gone out of style. But after the Holocaust it just had to go under cover for a bit, because it was distasteful in polite society to hate Jews out loud while the flames of the crematoria were still burning and the piles of bodies were still making the European earth move under the feet of villagers everywhere.
Furthermore-it is not predicated on 'preferring' Palestinian and pan-Arab nationalism to Jewish nationalism, that is not it at all. The deference to Palestinian and pan-Arab nationalism is just the currently acceptable vehicle for expressing Judenhaas.
If the best and most socially acceptable way of expressing Judenhaas was wearing pink pantyhose on one's face with a swastika painted on both cheeks of one's butt, that is what we would see.
And, the aim is not to deny the right of Jews to be free, but rather to deny the right of the Jew to live.
Period.

Rest in Peace
There were likely many stories of heroism-some we will never know.

Smart Stuff!
Here's a great piece about the sociopaths that many of us have met throughout our lives.
Most of the time the sociopath is a love interest, or a friend, but sometimes there are sociopathic relatives in our midst and of course-they are harder to disengage from.
Now, a lot of people put the sociopathic label on people who are just neurotic and annoying and that's wrong.
I also think it's wrong to arbitrarily label a parent as such, being a parent is often a thankless gig.
Kids who cut off contact with parents completely for whatever real wrongs or perceived wrongs they are accused of break parents' hearts. I can't even imagine the pain.
Sociopaths are narcissists as well, it's never their fault, they always 'did their best' and it's never about anyone but them.
I think this is an important lesson to share with young people, before they start dating, so that they can hopefully avoid these personality types, and at least have some insight into identifying these characteristics before they get emotionally involved.
And yes! Why yes! I am speaking from experience.

Planetary Voodoo
Freaky freaky day.
Started with Jewish mother issues (my own, not me), one kid with possible strep, subway delay and then progressed to The Call From School.
"Is everything OK? What? His head? A pole? Blood? Is he OK? What? He's OK. Still bleeding a bit? WHAT?? Yes I'll be right there. Is he vomitting? Head ache? (Quickly rule out concussion, stiches.)"
Race up to school, kid looks like a bruiser. They forgot to tell me he got a fat lip in the morning.
Treat all kids to ice cream sandwiches and throw get them in a nice warm bubble bath, make tea for the one with the sore throat. Thank goodness there are leftovers in the fridge.
Warm leftovers. Tidy up. Let mind wander.

Was just reading this piece from the Star about the Shafia honour murder trial.Apparently, "Shafie", the darling "liberal" Daddy and all around swell guy (hey-those girls did not have to wear the hijab-all was cool) found some condoms in one of the girls rooms.
Could this have been the straw that broke the camel's back? Did that find seal those poor girl's fate?

I don't think it's really how the media makes us stupid. It's more like how the stupid lefties in the media think we are stupid and continue to attempt to brainwash us.

Globe & Mail Gets it Totally Wrong AGAIN
Canada's NY Times wannabe newspaper gets it wrong again, as usual.
The story here is not really that there are helpless babies who need opiate detoxification right when they are born.
The Globe does do a good job at painting a pathetic picture of new babies on morphine drips.
The real story here is how the government of Ontario has made methadone so readily available for free to drug addicts and how profitable it is for pharmacists to dispense methadone kool-aid to drug addicts.
It's very big business.
The real story is also how many doctors are prescribing opiates to patients and getting them addicted to drugs.
The real story is why they continue to renew prescriptions of opiates to pregnant women!
This story makes me sick.
Pity the children, I do-but this is a much bigger story than little micro-druggie infants.
Is there any record of the record-breaking opiate prescribing doctors in Ontario? Is there any record of how much pharmacies and pharmacists stand to make by providing the methadone kool-aid to drug addicts under the guise of "harm reduction"?
This is a billion dollar industry.
The real story is in the comments.
The methadone problem in Ontario is a scam and the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Ontario should see this story not as a success in treating little opiate babies, but rather as a story that reflects their failure to police opiate happy doctors, over-prescribing powerful narcotics without any repercussion or any ability to police the use and redistribution of prescriptions and the drugs themselves.

New York Magazine Sneers at Perfectly Reasonable Student Who Did Not Want to Do "Academic" Work on Occupy
The sneers are just dripping off the page.
Did you hear about this? A disgrace.
Just look at the lede:
"Sara Ackerman, an unhinged New York University undergraduate student, completely lost it over the course of seven huge e-mails to professors and deans protesting an assigned ethnography of Zuccotti Park."
First of all, the fact that in our moronic, decadent, decaying society, that one could get "academic" credit for slumming among the moronic, drug-infused unwashed masses is pathetic.
It makes higher education look like a complete joke-which for the most part-it is.
The end sneer: "Clearly, no matter what student health says, this person is having some sort of a mental breakdown and needs help."
Presumably she needs to go to re-education training at the Office of Brainwashing and Equity and Diversity and Stuff.
It appears that Ackerman was threatened, but blame the victim is par for the course
Her main crime appears to be the use of underlining and bold, to try to make people "listen" via e-mail.

Mark Steyn: The Dude Gets It
The left hates disabled people, disabled children, the old the weak and the vulnerable. They have a one-size fits all cure for it: death.
Mark Steyn understands this-and gets to the heart of the despicable attack on a parent who faced the greatest loss of all.
This part choked me up: "he's entirely incapable of imagining how it must feel for a parent to experience within the same day both new life and death – or even to understand that the inability to imagine being in that situation ought to prompt a little circumspection."
I understand that feeling, I have been there. And I have seen one of my children hover between life and death on more than one occasion.

Addiction is a profitable, rehab-financing word for “habit.”
That is a very astute observation. It used to be that people just had bad habits, and of course they were addicted to the habits, but it's quite a different prism indeed to say that someone has an amorphous "addiction" which does indeed open the doors not only to rehab, but alleviates fault and turns the habit into a medical condition-rather than a bad choice of habit that was entered into voluntarily at some stage.
By the way, the people that I know who have kicked their habits-beaten addictions are some of the the strongest people that I have ever met and I respect them with my heart and soul.
