Thank you for sharing this heartwarming story. In parlous and decadent times, we do well to remember that most people, in most places, are basically decent and well-meaning. God knows I myself have benefited from the kindness of strangers on numerous occasions.

The young paramedic, using his quick wits, stumbled onto a version of what was--and probably still is, in the poorer parts of the world--commonly used as an incubator for preemies.

One of my great-uncles, born premature in rural Cuba around the turn of the 20th century, was kept alive in just such a jury-rigged contraption, essentially a wooden box lined with towels and kept warm near the stove. He lived until his late 70s.
