The American _Left_ turned on Israel a long time ago: Remember the Madrid Conference of 1991 and the Oslo accords of 1993, which essentially legitimized a terrorist organization, the PLO? (And, intellectually, the the process of transforming their vision of Israel from a beleaguered hero nation to a genocidal Zionazi outpost can be traced back to the late 1960s.) The process of demonization has just become more blatant under the Obama administration.
In my humble, uncredentialed opinion, the escalation of the American Left's anti-Israeli foreign policy under Obama is due to the racial filter through which he and his minions see the world. The Israelis and the Palestinians are not just two polities locked in a regional conflict: The Israelis are honky oppressors of the Palestinian "people of color." Hence, the former can do no good (except to surrender abjectly), while the latter can do no harm; that is the essence of racial theory analysis accepted by the American Leftist intelligentsia and their allies in government and the news media.
