The religious instinct in human beings doesn't disappear when they stop believing in God . . . it just gets transferred to something else. One of the funniest lines touching on this phenomenon was Wolfgang Pauli's comment on the great theoretical physicist Paul Dirac's militant atheism: "There is no God, and Dirac is his prophet."
