I remember reading in a Mark Steyn article that Great Britain now has the highest ratio of police officers to population in the EU. Apparently all they are good for is to harass respectable people for expressing politically incorrect views and for petty violations of traffic ordinances.
That said, the police can never substitute for an involved citizenry. Men have a moral obligation to protect women from harm; they must put themselves at risk if necessary to do so. It helps, of course, if the official guardians of the public order do not disarm the citizenry and do their best to emasculate the males among them.
