In my opinion-it's not either or, although a lot of us are total goofball screw ups.
Sure, parents who take an interest in their children and in their children's schooling will have better results (hopefully anyway).
But the deadweight in the public school system is a societal issue, with parents and families being held ransom, all of which is being paid for by public funds.
Private family screw ups do affect society in a general way-but do not have the same fiscal impact no matter what the left hand-wrings on about 'societal costs'.
No serious examination of public school failure can be complete without a corollary statistical analysis of the family status of the children.

I'm still surprised anyone still reads and/or believes "Genius" Friedman, any longer. Wasn't he the oracle who declared the "Arab Spring" would change the world for the better? And now that the Arab Spring has turned into something way more sinister and destructive, his silence is deafening.
