Here's what I think.
It is pathetic, but imperative to note that despite the extensive layers of governmental “child protection” services that were activated, and the girls' school officials (alleged) concern about their welfare, multiple police visits and repeat calls to 911 that three Shafia girls and one hapless, polygamous wife ended up dead at the bottom of cold waters in Kingston.
Perhaps one of the most horrifying aspects of this situation is not that people who knew the girls and the family are saying “we didn’t know” (that’s bad enough), but that bureaucrats and police officers are candidly admitting they knew, but they were too afraid of acting and offending cultural sensibilities!
In other words, three sisters and their “aunt” are dead, but at least nobody’s feelings were hurt? If that is the case, then Canada is really screwed-we are a country chock-full of gutless wonders.
Perhaps if these girls had published cartoons about the prophet Mohammad they would have been investigated more aggressively by Canadian governmental authorities (see Ezra Levant) or suggested that Islam might be taking over the world (see Mark Steyn) they might have been at least put in protective custody against potential vigilante “justice”.
