Where is this boy's father?

Unfortunately, for many Hispanics in the U. S., the father is often nowhere in sight. Hispanics are now second only to black Americans in the incidence of illegitimacy, with over half of all Hispanic births being given by single mothers. Additionally, the strongly Catholic culture that once characterized Hispanics, especially Mexican-Americans, has atrophied markedly since the 1960s (when the Catholic Church decided to commit institutional suicide by Vatican Council).

A lot of conservatives in the U. S., e.g, George W. Bush and Rick Perry, still romanticize the Hispanic--meaning Mexican-American in the context of their life experiences--family, which was indeed, well within living memory (I remember it) a strong (and strongly patriarchal) unit. Alas, you no longer find too many Mexican-Americans who fit into the _Lilies of the Field_ mold (though it's still a great movie). The welfare state, abetted by the aforementioned collapse of Hispanic Catholicity, has worked the same wonderful magic on the Hispanic, and especially the Mexican-American, family that it did on the black family somewhat earlier.

My guess is that the boy's father, even if he was once married to the mother, is no longer around to take an interest.
