Empty Symbolism on Hate Crimes

This is one of the first pieces on the "hate crimes" legislation that I have seen in the American mainstream media.

"The logic behind the proposed measure is hard to follow. Says sponsoring Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.), "No members of society -- none -- deserve to be victims of a violent crime because of their race, their religion, their ethnic background, their disability, their gender, their gender identity, or their sexual orientation." Which raises the question: Who exactly does deserve to be the victim of a violent crime?"

(certainly not Mary Jo Kopechne but I digress..)

America: Welcome to Canadian Hate Crimes Hell, Hate Crimes Bill Passed in House

The destruction of America continues with the passing of America's brand new, shiny "Hate Crimes" bill. Has this been anywhere in the American news? Isn't anyone in America concerned about the thought crime brigade waiting for a chance to barge into their brains, and tell them what they may think, and prosecuting crime based on motivation? Haven't they seen what happens here in Canada when the government is empowered to decide what is acceptable speech and what is hateful and thereby forbidden? America-is that what you really want? “Justice will now depend on the race, gender, sexual orientation, disability or other protected status of the victim. It will allow different penalties to be imposed for the same crime,” said Rep. Lamar Smith (D-Texas), ranking member on the Judiciary Committee. Smith also said HCPA could target those who opposed gay marriage and forms of unconventional sexual expression.

Hate Crime Legislation Coming to America?

"A grandma using an ATM machine should have at least as much protection under the law as a man walking out of a “gay” bar. But under “hate crimes” laws that include “sexual orientation,” an assailant of a man perceived as homosexual would be subjected to greater penalties than grandma’s mugger. "
