There are a lot of people here in Canada who think it's really cool that a child might be taken away from her mother because her mother is a racist idiot who scrawled swastikas on her daughter's body and taught her all kinds of unpalatable racist nonesense, including a love of Hitler.

I say, anyone thinking this is a great idea might want to reconsider how much power they would like for the state to have to take away their children.

This item comes to us from the UK: a woman is appealing to European Human Rights Court (good luck with that-Ed) because she is deemed "too stupid" to raise her child.

How funny is that? Hilarious? Side-slapping. What if people are next deemed by the state to be too conservative? Too religious? Too fat? Too cheap? Where do you want to draw the line?

This is an absolutely horrifying story, and even if there is more to the story-which there inevitably always is-it should sound alarm bells all over the 'civilized' world.

The Great Dalrymple: A Modern Witch Trial

I'll be off-line for the Jewish holiday of Shavuot ("Weeks") which begins at sundown tonight.

It's not as well known as Chanukah and Passover, but it's still an important holiday. During Shavuot, we celebrate the giving of the Torah to the Jewish people. We read the Book of Ruth and eat dairy foods. If you would like to read more about Shavuot, there is lots of great information here.

This year, the holiday starts on Thursday evening, with the second day of the holiday blending seamlessly into the Jewish Sabbath.

Ruth, a convert to Judaism is famous for standing by her new, adopted people-your people will be my people. Plus, she made some pretty spectacular Jewish babies, and from her lineage comes the House of David.

In Western European society, to go out in public with your face masked is (unless done for comic effect) disturbing. Hiding the face is felt to be threatening, and slightly scary, and subliminally this goes way back, and quite deep I think: it certainly frightens children.

Would it be wrong to try to convey to communities in Britain who adopt the full hijab that, though it is a woman's legal right to dress as she chooses, she should recognise that she's in a country where many people will find a masked face disturbing, and that (without meaning to) she is acting in a culturally inappropriate manner, which may offend?

Do the masked women I see in the street in Whitechapel actually know this? I cannot say, because I've never spoken to them: or, rather, when I do, they look away and walk away. This too, in Britain, is rude. Do they know? Shouldn't they?

The Media, Islam and Political Correctness

"the [New York]Times ran a story on the secret FBI recordings in which the men discussed their hatred of Jews and their intent to kill U.S. soldiers in retaliation for killings of "Muslim brothers and sisters in Muslim countries." The article's lead paragraph focused on the men's criminal backgrounds; not until the fourth paragraph was there a reference to their jihadist motivation (they shouted "Allah Akbar!" as they brought their newly acquired stash of weapons to their warehouse).

In a particularly odd passage, the article noted that "law enforcement officials initially said the four men were Muslims, but their religious backgrounds remained uncertain Thursday" and that three had previously identified as Christian in prison records. This, despite ample evidence in the same article that the plot, set in motion with the help of an FBI informant, was motivated by Islamic fanaticism."

It must have been those damned Amishofascists again.

Who Wrote "Dreams of My Father" and Why Does It Matter?

This is a very interesting piece by Jack Cashill on President Hopeychangey's snoozerama autobiography, schmaltzily titled Dreams of My Father.
